Learning
objectives

Numerical Mathematics is a cornerstone of Scientific Computing. As a meeting point of several disciplines within mathematics and the modern applied sciences, it becomes a tool for their qualitative and quantitative investigation. The aim of this course is to provide the methodological foundations of numerical mathematics, addressing its main aspects such as stability, accuracy and algorithmic complexity, and to provide methodologies for the design, development, analysis and use of mathematical software and Problem Solving Environments, including through laboratory activities. The course is intended for students of science degree programmes, in particular those in Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering.

Contents

Solution of linear systems by direct and iterative methods, approximation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, solution of nonlinear equations and systems, polynomial approximation of functions and data, composite polynomial interpolation, numerical integration.
