Learning
objectives

Numerical Mathematics is a cornerstone of Scientific Computing. As a meeting point of several disciplines within mathematics and the modern applied sciences, it becomes a tool for their qualitative and quantitative investigation. The aim of this course is to provide the methodological foundations of numerical mathematics, addressing its main aspects such as stability, accuracy and algorithmic complexity, and to provide methodologies for the design, development, analysis and use of mathematical software and Problem Solving Environments, including through laboratory activities. The course is intended for students of science degree programmes, in particular those in Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering.

Contents

Approximation of functions by generalised Fourier series, least-squares approximation of functions, the fast Fourier transform, approximation of the derivatives of a function, numerical solution of ordinary differential equations, approximation of boundary value problems.
