Examination method

Oral exam.

Learning
objectives

The course aims to provide the elements (techniques and solution methods) useful for the mathematical modelling of real phenomena, including the macroscopic modelling of continuous systems.

Syllabus

Mathematical modelling of real phenomena by means of difference equations, ordinary differential equations and/or partial differential equations. Techniques and methods needed for the study of the models presented.

Expected learning
outcomes

At the end of the course, students must demonstrate that they

  • know and understand the general issues related to the mathematical modelling of real phenomena;
  • are able to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired to tackle problems in the Applied Sciences;
  • are able to communicate ideas and solutions clearly, rigorously and effectively to both specialist and non-specialist audiences;
  • are able to identify the most appropriate methods to analyse and solve a problem related to the course topics and to interpret the results correctly.

Learning outcomes
to be assessed

Mastery of the techniques and methods presented during the course for tackling the study of the evolution of some models from the Applied Sciences. In addition to testing the contents, the exam also aims to verify that a sufficient command of the specific language has been achieved.
